Statement of Intent
The brief requested that I make two front covers and two contents pages of a new youth magazine with a 16-25-year-old mass demographic. The brief also stated that I needed to make a website with one homepage, one linked page and all products must have a clear sense of branding.
My audience are aged 16-25, not gender specific, therefore I will make sure to include headlines that I feel would apply to this age range. Using my magazine front cover analysis skills, I will be including content such as confessions, exam tips and how to take care of the environment. As it is a lifestyle magazine for “fun loving” young people, I shall make sure to cover upcoming events in Norfolk and Suffolk (due to it being a regional magazine) as well as fashion and what’s on trend. I will make sure to represent my trendy audience in a positive way. My audience mood board reflects this-I have included logos from shops they may shop at that are labelled more ‘edgy’ and fashionable by this age range, such as Catfish and Dogfish, unique to Norwich, Norfolk. I have also included event logos such as Sundown and Latitude, mentioned on my magazine website, that many teens attend. Sundown allows people over the age of 15 to go in alone, meaning it appeals to the age range shown in the demographic and held a huge 22,000 people on the Saturday in September 2019.
I will be using a colour scheme that is not too broad; monochromatic and minimalistic styles tend to appeal to my target audience, with myself being within that age range meaning I can use my own knowledge to aid me when designing the product. However, it will not be all black and white but using photoshop I can select colours appearing in my images to use in the background of texts and cover lines.
Using my knowledge of the Media Theoretical Framework and having studied media products such as magazines, I will make sure my magazine follows typical conventions such as a masthead (I have chosen a sans-serif font to target a younger, trendy audience) and main cover lines, which again shall be mentioned in the contents page of my magazine. My contents page will include eye catching images and page numbers as any magazine would have for easy navigation. I will also continue referencing this when designing my website as through cross-media and new technology, new brands have been created that can be accessed a number of ways and across a number of platforms-in this case, a website in addition to a magazine that will show a clear sense of branding through my logos and images, sometimes using the same models to create the sense of a brand, but making sure to include unfamiliar faces too, to fit the brief. This influences house style and broadens the industry, with merchandise and different platforms creating opportunities for profit.
